2021 Live Festival Cancellation

September 21, 2020

Dear Members, Supporters, and Friends of the Anchorage Folk Festival:

It is with a song of sorrow that the Anchorage Folk Festival Board reaches out to you with the decision to not hold an in-person festival in January 2021.

This was not an easy decision to make. However, at this time we cannot in good faith commit the organization to the fiscal and contractual obligations necessary to pull off an in-person event in January with so many uncertainties still surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

We also believe that in light of these uncertainties and related potential health risks associated with COVID-19 that we cannot put our friends, families, and community at risk by holding a weeks-long indoor event. Therefore, we have concluded that this is the best path forward for the festival this coming year.

In light of this weighty decision the Board is looking at options to hold a festival in some virtual format. While we may not be able to gather together to listen to and create music in person, many other festivals have successfully pivoted to virtual formats. We’re hoping to bring to bear some of our own experiences gained from the successful ‘Keeping the Folk at Home’ virtual festival we produced last May. It’s a far cry from the richness and fun of circling up to jam or dance with long-time friends, but it can still bring a sense of community and an opportunity to enjoy the soul-satisfying experience of sharing music together. So, stay tuned for more info to come regarding how the 2021 Anchorage Folk Festival might unfold and how you can participate!

We are so grateful for you- our amazing musical community- and for the support that you’ve given over the years. One of the strongest aspects of folk music is its ability to bring comfort and resilience to folks during times of challenge and change. We look forward to drawing on that strength in new ways to support our community through these unprecedented times.

Be well, stay healthy, stay in touch, and keep the music in your hearts, hands, and feet!
